A TOWER BUILT BY DYNASTIES

The Minar is a palimpsest of Indian history, with each phase of its construction reflecting the ambitions and aesthetics of different rulers over 300 years.

Qutb-ud-din Aibak (c. 1199)

Laid the foundation and built the first storey as a victory tower.

Iltutmish (c. 1220)

Added the next three storeys, completing the original four-storey structure.

Firoz Shah Tughlaq (1368)

After lightning damage, repaired and added the 4th and 5th storeys using marble.

Later Repairs (1505 & 1828)

Restored by Sikandar Lodi after an earthquake and later repaired by the British Major Smith.
