The Tale of Two Builders

The fort's identity was shaped by two great Mughal emperors. Akbar built a formidable military fortress of red sandstone, while his grandson Shah Jahan transformed it into an opulent palace of white marble.

A Stage for History

The fort was the backdrop for some of the most dramatic events in Mughal history, from Shivaji's daring confrontation to Shah Jahan's tragic imprisonment.

Shivaji's Confrontation (1666)

The Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji visited the fort to meet Aurangzeb in the Diwan-i-Khas. Feeling disrespected by his reception, he famously defied the emperor before making a legendary escape from house arrest in Agra, a pivotal moment in Maratha-Mughal relations.

Shah Jahan's Gilded Cage (1658-1666)

After being deposed by his son Aurangzeb, Emperor Shah Jahan spent the last eight years of his life as a prisoner within the fort. He was confined to the Musamman Burj, an octagonal tower with a marble balcony offering a poignant view of the Taj Mahal, the tomb of his beloved wife.
